When you hear the term cage-free, it refers to a livestock farming method where animals are allowed to move freely within their environment. In this system, animals like chickens are granted the opportunity to exercise their rights and freedoms. Five globally recognized animal freedoms are fundamental to ensuring the well-being of animals:
Freedom from hunger and thirst – Animals should have access to nutritious food and clean water.
Freedom from pain and injury – Animals should receive proper veterinary care and be attended to whenever they are ill or injured.
Freedom from discomfort – Animals should be housed in appropriate shelters that protect them from harsh weather conditions such as direct sunlight, draughts, and rain.
Freedom to express natural behaviors – Animals should be allowed to engage in natural activities like dust bathing, perching, and mounting.
Freedom from fear and distress – Animals should be treated in ways that prevent mental suffering and promote their psychological well-being.
These animal rights are essential for ensuring that animals live free from cruelty and suffering. In Kenya, the cage-free campaign is gradually gaining momentum as stakeholders increasingly recognize the need to rescue or free layer hens from battery cages. These cages confine millions of hens, turning them into prisoners solely for profit margins, while their health, reproduction, and overall well-being deteriorate within the restrictive wired enclosures.
The lack of awareness about animal welfare in Kenya has led to millions of chickens being confined in cages. However, the fight for the welfare of feathered animals is gaining ground, and we, at Nuru, are at the forefront of this campaign. We are committed to freeing the millions of layer hens locked in these cages. The confinement in battery cages exposes hens to metabolic, reproductive, and physical stress.
Our mission is to advocate for their freedom and improve their welfare by promoting cage-free farming practices.
Ending animal suffering, whatever it takes.
